He remarked, "My initial reaction was, was there enough evidence there for the third umpire to overrule what was given? It was not out on the field of play." Shastri believed there wasn't sufficient proof to change the call.

Michael Hussey, a former Australian batter, also found the decision controversial. Commentating on air, he questioned whether the Snicko spike resulted from the ball hitting the bat or Rahul's bat hitting his pad. "You can see the bat just clipping the pad," Hussey noted, suggesting doubt about the decision's accuracy.

Matthew Hayden, another former Australian opener, believed that Snicko's spike wasn't due to an edge from Rahul's bat. He explained that Rahul's bat and pad weren't together when the ball passed. "It bat hitting pad is after, in fact, the ball passes the edge," Hayden commented on air.

Mark Waugh added that it was a bold decision by Illingworth given the available evidence. "That's a very brave decision given the evidence that we've seen there; unfortunately KL Rahul's got to cop it sweet … he won't be happy with the way it's ended," Waugh remarked.

Former Indian players Wasim Jaffer and Irfan Pathan criticised Illingworth's decision. Jaffer tweeted about poor technology use and protocol breaches: "Third umpire asked for another angle which wasn't provided... Poor use of technology and proper protocol not followed." Pathan echoed this sentiment by stating on X, "If it's not clear don't give it out!"

Simon Taufel, a former ICC elite umpire, also felt Rahul was unlucky. He mentioned seeing a spike on RTS with Rahul's bat away from his pad. Taufel suggested that if rolled through naturally, a second spike indicating bat hitting pad might have appeared.
