India Secures 46-Run Lead In 1st Test Against Australia Despite Scoring Only 150 All Out

In the first Test between India and Australia, India secured a 46-run lead despite a modest first innings score at Perth's Optus Stadium. On day one, India posted one of their lowest totals in Test cricket.

India managed to score 150 runs in their initial innings. Jasprit Bumrah, leading the team, spearheaded the bowling attack as India dismissed Australia for 104 on the second day of the match.

India Leads After Low First Innings Total in Perth
  • 99 All Out vs New Zealand in Hamilton, 2002 (5 runs lead)
  • 147 All Out vs England in Lord's, 1936 (13 runs lead)
  • 150 All Out vs Australia in Perth, 2024 (46 runs lead)
  • 179 All Out vs England in Wankhede, 1981 (13 runs lead)
  • 200 All Out vs West Indies in Kingston, 2000 (97 runs lead)

This achievement marks another instance where India gained a lead after posting a low first innings total. Previously, they had done so against New Zealand and England with scores of just 99 and 147 respectively.

Among these matches, India emerged victorious twice—against England in 1981 and West Indies in 2000. However, they lost to England in 1936 and New Zealand in 2002 despite taking narrow leads.

On the second day of play, Australia resumed at 67/7 with Mitchell Starc and Alex Carey at the crease. Bumrah quickly dismissed Carey for 21, caught by Rishabh Pant behind the stumps. This marked Bumrah's eleventh five-wicket haul in Tests.

Harshit Rana then claimed Nathan Lyon's wicket for five runs in the 33rd over. Lyon attempted to guide a short ball past third man but ended up edging it to KL Rahul at slip.

Starc and Josh Hazlewood then frustrated Indian bowlers by taking Australia past the century mark. Their partnership lasted for 110 balls before Starc was caught by Pant off a mistimed shot.

The Australian innings concluded at 104 runs from 51.2 overs. Bumrah excelled with figures of 5/30 from his 18 overs. Rana contributed with three wickets for 48 runs while Mohammed Siraj took two crucial wickets.

After lunch, India's openers KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal provided a solid start to their second innings. They built a partnership of fifty runs, bringing India's overall lead closer to the hundred mark.
