Concerns Arise Over Incomplete Stadium Renovations Ahead Of ICC Champions Trophy 2025 In Pakistan
The ICC Champions Trophy 2025, set to take place in Pakistan, is facing several challenges. Concerns have arisen over unfinished stadium renovations, logistical issues, and geopolitical tensions. Although the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) assures timely completion of upgrades, insiders suggest significant delays could affect the tournament's smooth running.
PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi expressed confidence in the progress of venue preparations. He stated that upgrades in Karachi, Rawalpindi, and Lahore are on schedule. Naqvi emphasized the board's dedication to providing world-class facilities with a 30,000-seat capacity, aiming to enhance the viewing experience for fans.

Despite these assurances, a Pakistani journalist shared a different perspective with myKhel. "They've demolished sections of the Lahore and Karachi stadiums unnecessarily, leaving some areas unfit for use. Spectators previously faced obstructions like pillars and nets, and while Multan is comparatively better, Karachi remains problematic," she explained. This insider view underscores the difficulties of overhauling rather than simply upgrading stadiums.
The ICC Trophy Tour also encountered obstacles when cities in Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK) were removed from its itinerary. This change followed objections from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The revised tour now includes only major Pakistani cities such as Karachi, Rawalpindi, and Islamabad.
As defending champions, Pakistan's hosting rights have become a geopolitical issue. Reports indicate that India has declined to travel for the tournament. This situation has led to ICC discussions about alternative solutions like a hybrid model or relocating the event to venues in the UAE or South Africa.
Naqvi criticized how the ICC has managed these disputes. He called for impartiality and respect for Pakistan's hosting rights. The combination of incomplete renovations, logistical constraints, and ongoing political tensions raises doubts about Pakistan's readiness for the Champions Trophy.
This situation presents a significant test for the PCB's organizational capabilities as they strive to ensure successful execution of this prestigious event.
