ICC Suffers Financial Blow At T20 World Cup 2024: A Call For Change?
India's triumph in the T20 World Cup 2024 ended an 11-year ICC trophy drought. However, the tournament was financially disastrous for the International Cricket Council (ICC). According to PTI, the ICC incurred a loss of approximately USD 20 million (Rs 167 crore) while hosting the games in the USA.
This financial setback will be a significant topic at the ICC Annual Conference starting Friday in Colombo. Although not listed on the nine-point agenda of the Annual General Meeting (AGM), it will be discussed as part of a "post-event report."

A substantial portion of the T20 World Cup took place in the USA, including the much-anticipated India-Pakistan match in New York. The financial losses from these matches will be closely examined during the conference. The ICC aimed to expand cricket's global reach by hosting major matches in the USA, but this decision led to unforeseen financial difficulties.
Many matches were abandoned due to rain, with a significant number cancelled in Florida because of cyclonic weather. Consequently, the ICC lost ticket revenues from these matches, resulting in considerable financial losses.
Another crucial topic for discussion at the AGM is Jay Shah, BCCI secretary, potentially replacing Greg Barclay as ICC chairman. An ICC source told PTI that there is keen interest in Shah's transition to leadership within the world body.
"It is not about how but when, as he still has one year left as BCCI secretary before his cooling off period in Indian board starts in 2025 as per constitution," said the source.
Speculation exists about changing the chairmanship term from three terms of two years each to two terms of three years each. This change would facilitate Shah's smooth transition from BCCI to ICC. Current chairman George Barclay may have to vacate his position before his tenure ends if Shah becomes a contender for the ICC role.
The ICC's decision to host key matches in the USA was intended to broaden cricket's appeal globally. However, unexpected weather conditions and match cancellations led to significant revenue losses. This issue will be addressed during discussions at the upcoming conference.
The potential leadership change within ICC and its implications will also be a focal point during these meetings. Jay Shah's possible ascension to chairman could bring new dynamics to cricket governance on an international level.
The discussions at Colombo are expected to cover both financial setbacks and leadership transitions extensively. These topics are critical for shaping future strategies and decisions within international cricket governance.
