ICC Takes Action On Nassau County Pitch After Player Safety Concerns At T20 World Cup

New York, Jun 6: The pitch at Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York has become a significant concern in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024. The ICC acknowledged on Thursday (June 6) that the pitches used so far "have not played as consistently as we would have all wanted."

This issue was highlighted after India's eight-wicket win over Ireland in a low-scoring match where Ireland was bowled out for 96 in just 16 overs.

ICC Acts on World Cup Pitch Concerns

India's skipper Rohit Sharma, who scored a half-century during the chase, was struck on his right bicep by a delivery from pacer Josh Little, forcing him to retire hurt. The ball unexpectedly took off from a length on a pitch that exhibited significant uneven bounce. Similarly, Rishabh Pant was hit on his left elbow during his unbeaten 36, raising further concerns about player safety.

The drop-in pitch, specially brought from Adelaide for the World Cup, has been criticized by several former players. Irfan Pathan, Michael Vaughan, and Sanjay Manjrekar have all voiced their concerns, calling the pitch unsuitable for T20 matches, especially in an event meant to promote cricket in the USA.

Pathan expressed his discontent on Star Sports, stating, "Look, we definitely want to promote cricket in America, but this pitch is not safe for players. If we had a pitch like this in India, a match would never be played there again for a very long time."

Vaughan also criticised the pitch on his social media, writing, "Trying to sell the game in the states is great... but for players to have to play on this sub-standard surface in New York is unacceptable."

ICC's Response to Subpar Nassau County Stadium Pitch

The ICC has acknowledged the issues with the pitch. "T20 Inc and the ICC recognize that the pitches used so far at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium have not played as consistently as we would have all wanted," said the ICC in a statement on Thursday.

"The world-class grounds team has been working hard since the conclusion of yesterday's game to remedy the situation and deliver the best possible surfaces for the remaining matches."

The next match at this venue is going to be highly anticipated as arch-rivals India and Pakistan take on each other on Sunday (June 9). Fans and experts are hoping there are no injuries to the players during that game due to the pitch.

Rohit's Injury and Future Matches

Despite the injury scare, Rohit Sharma is expected to be fit for India's marquee clash against Pakistan on Sunday. A senior BCCI source indicated that Rohit's injury is not serious and he should be ready for the game after a couple of practice sessions.

Technical Analysis of the New York Pitch

The pitch's condition, described as "bordering on dangerous" by some, has raised significant safety concerns. Observers noted that while the pitch had a grass cover, it also had large cracks that caused unpredictable seam movement and bounce. "It is actually a very fresh pitch. There is a grass cover but along with it are big cracks," explained a source.

The Indian team management, while displeased, is unlikely to file an official complaint. Batting coach Vikram Rathour commented, "It is a challenging wicket as far as batting is concerned but this is what we have. So we need to find ways to deal with that."

Additional Player Safety Incidents

Further incidents were highlighting the pitch's dangers. Ireland's Harry Tector had to undergo a mandatory concussion test after being hit by a short ball from Jasprit Bumrah, which first struck his gloves and then his helmet before Virat Kohli caught it.
