Ian Redpath, Esteemed Australian Cricket Legend, Dies At Age 83 After Illness

Ian Redpath, a former Australian cricket opener, has died at 83 after battling illness. He was a key player for the national team in the 1960s and 70s. Recently, his legacy was honoured by naming the Ian Redpath Scoreboard at Geelong Cricket Club, his hometown.

Redpath's cricket career began with a Test debut against South Africa at the MCG in 1964, where he scored 97 runs. Throughout his career, he played 66 Tests and five ODIs, achieving eight centuries and an average of 43.45.

Known for his resilience, Redpath scored his first Test century in 1969 against the West Indies. His career highlight came in the 1975-76 series when he scored three centuries in four innings, establishing himself as one of Australia's most reliable openers.

Beyond cricket, Redpath was unique for being the last amateur to play for Australia, often refusing match fees to keep his amateur football status. His determination extended beyond sports into a successful antiques career and painting later in life.

Greg Chappell, who debuted alongside Redpath, praised him as a mentor: "Ian shielded me during my first Test innings, teaching me the essence of Test match batting. His courage was unparalleled." Redpath also set a record with 32 runs off one over in first-class cricket and hit iconic sixes during his penultimate Test.

Despite retiring at his peak, World Series Cricket drew him back to the game. He continued to demonstrate resilience and contributed to coaching young cricketers, ensuring his influence on Australian cricket endured.

Acknowledgement and Recognition

In recognition of his contributions, Redpath was inducted into the Australian Cricket Hall of Fame in 2023. Cricket Australia chairman Mike Baird remarked on Redpath's impact: "Ian was a much-loved and revered figure. His courage, sportsmanship, and wry humour made him a mainstay of Australian cricket during one of its great eras."
