ICC Honours Hayley Matthews And Muhammad Waseem As Players Of The Month For April 2024

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has unveiled the recipients of its Player of the Month awards for April 2024, shining a spotlight on two cricketers who have made significant impacts in their respective teams. West Indies captain Hayley Matthews and UAE opener Muhammad Waseem were distinguished with the women's and men's titles, showcasing their exceptional performances on the field.

Matthews, securing her third ICC Women's Player of the Month award, demonstrated her all-around capabilities during the West Indies' tour of Pakistan. She not only led her team to victory but also showcased her prowess by scoring 451 runs and taking 12 wickets across both ODI and T20I series. Her remarkable unbeaten 140 in the first ODI was a highlight, contributing to a 4-1 T20I series win. Matthews expressed her joy over the award, emphasizing the team's success in Pakistan and her anticipation for the Sri Lanka tour to gain more points in the ICC Women's Championship.

Matthews, Waseem Win ICC April Awards

On the men's side, Waseem's achievement marked a historic moment as he became the first UAE player to clinch the ICC Men's Player of the Month award. His outstanding performance in the ACC Premier Cup, where he scored 269 runs with an average of 44.83 including a century in the final against Oman, played a pivotal role in UAE's victory and their qualification for next year's Asia Cup. Waseem voiced his honour in receiving this accolade and highlighted it as a motivation for players from emerging cricket nations.

The selection process for April's winners involved votes from both registered fans on the ICC website and a specialist panel that includes ICC Hall of Famers and media representatives. Matthews and Waseem were chosen over other notable candidates such as Sri Lanka's Chamari Athapaththu and Pakistan's Shaheen Shah Afridi.

These awards not only celebrate individual brilliance but also reflect the competitive spirit and vibrancy within international cricket. Players from across different nations continue to leave their mark on the global stage, contributing to the sport's dynamic and inclusive nature.
