Hattrick In Women's ODI Cricket: Charlie Dean Joins Exclusive List Of Players

Charlie Dean achieved a remarkable milestone on Sunday, December 8, as England secured a 6-wicket win against South Africa in the second ODI of their three-match series at Kingsmead, Durban. This victory allowed England to level the series.

Dean's performance was outstanding, as she became only the third English woman and the 12th player overall to achieve a hat-trick in Women's One Day Internationals. Her impressive figures of 4 for 45 played a crucial role in England's triumph.

The hat-trick was completed over two overs. Dean dismissed Marizanne Kapp with the last ball of the 17th over and then removed Nadine de Klerk and Sinalo Jafta with the first two balls of the 19th over.

"I didn't even realise I had a hat-trick so it was great to find that out afterwards," Dean said in a video shared by England Cricket X handle, as quoted by ICC. "I am pleased with my game at the moment. I am still learning and growing but I'm becoming more consistent in how I'm going about things."

This achievement made Dean the first English woman to secure an ODI hat-trick since Clare Connor did so against India in Northampton back in 1999. Carole Hodges was the pioneer, achieving this feat against Denmark in 1993.

The last player to claim a hat-trick in Women's ODIs before Dean was Australia's Megan Schutt, who accomplished this against West Indies in 2019. In that same year, South Africa's Masabata Klaas also took three consecutive wickets against Pakistan.

In total, 12 players have achieved hat-tricks in women's One Day Internationals from 1993 to 2024. This list includes notable names like Dean and Hodges.

Besides these women cricketers, four English men have also achieved this rare feat: Steven Finn, Steve Harmison, Andrew Flintoff, and James Anderson have all taken ODI hat-tricks.

In the SA-W vs ENG-W second ODI match, Dean's exceptional bowling helped restrict South Africa to just 135 runs. Tammy Beaumont (34), Maia Bouchier (33), and Danni Wyatt-Hodge (25*) then guided England to victory within just 24 overs.

The England team had previously lost the series opener by six wickets in Kimberley last week. However, their win on December 8 ensured that they leveled the series at 1-1 ahead of the final match scheduled for Wednesday, December 11, in Potchefstroom.
