Joe Root Calls Harry Brook The Best Batter In The World After England's Series Win Against New Zealand

Joe Root praised Harry Brook as the top batter globally after England's series win against New Zealand on Sunday, December 8. Ben Stokes' team secured a decisive 323-run victory in the second Test, clinching a 2-0 series lead.

England faced challenges in Wellington, slipping to 43-4 in their first innings. However, Brook's impressive 123 runs and Ollie Pope's 66 helped them reach a total of 280 all out. Brook has now scored seven centuries in just 10 Tests away from home, setting a record for any batter in their first ten overseas matches.

Yorkshire and England teammate Root believes no player currently surpasses Brook. "Just been a great week, from the position we were in, to then manage to win the game by day three, just shows how well the boys played," Root said. He added that Brook is "the best player in the world at the minute."

Root highlighted Brook's ability to handle pressure and counterattack effectively against both pace and spin. "He's got it all, he can absorb pressure and put it back on you. He is destructive against both pace and spin, to manage those conditions exceptionally well and play some great counter-attacking cricket," Root stated.

In the second innings, Root contributed significantly with a 130-ball 106 as England strengthened their lead. Jacob Bethell scored 96 runs, slightly more than opener Ben Duckett's 92. Root now shares fifth place with India's Rahul Dravid for most Test centuries by any batter, having achieved his 36th century.

Root reached his century with a signature ramp shot over New Zealand wicket-keeper Tom Blundell off seamer Will O'Rourke's delivery. He admitted that this shot was somewhat planned after noticing changes in the field setup.

"It wasn't [at first pre-meditated], and then they brought third man up," Root explained. "I was like it's the new ball, they are more likely to go length than short. It's worth a gamble, it's worth the risk!" This strategic thinking paid off as England capitalised on their advantage.
