Hardik Pandya In Line For India T20 Captaincy Post Rohit Sharma's Exit
Rohit Sharma has announced his retirement from T20Is right after India secured a seven-run victory over South Africa in the final match held in Barbados, winning the T20 World Cup and ending an 11-year drought for an ICC trophy.
With Rohit's departure, the opening slot and captaincy in the T20 format are now open. All-rounder Hardik Pandya is the leading candidate to take over as captain in this format.

Pandya has already stepped in as captain when Rohit was unavailable after India's last T20 World Cup. Rohit returned earlier this year to play against Afghanistan.
BCCI Secretary Jay Shah stated on Monday (July 1) that the decision regarding Pandya's appointment as the next T20 captain will be made by the selectors. "Captaincy will be decided by the selectors and we will announce it after discussing with them. You asked about Hardik, there were lot of questions over his form but we and selectors showed faith in him and he proved himself," Shah told select media in Bridgetown.
Pandya served as vice-captain under Rohit during the recent T20 World Cup 2024, where India finally ended their 11-year wait for an ICC title. Despite losing two ICC finals in the past year, they triumphed in the Caribbean.
Although Pandya faced criticism as Mumbai Indians' captain, with the team finishing last with only four wins out of 14 matches, his overall record as a captain is commendable. He led Gujarat Titans to win the Indian Premier League in their debut season and secured a runner-up finish before returning to Mumbai Indians ahead of IPL 2024.
Other Potential Leaders
In T20Is, Pandya boasts a 66.67% winning rate, having guided India to 10 victories out of 16 matches, with five losses and one no result. His first stint as captain was during India's tour to New Zealand in 2022.
Besides Pandya, other players like Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant, Jasprit Bumrah, KL Rahul, and Ruturaj Gaikwad have also captained India in T20Is. Shubman Gill is set for his first international captaincy role in an upcoming five-match series against Zimbabwe.
The selection committee will soon decide who will lead India's T20 team moving forward. The new captain will have big shoes to fill following Rohit's successful tenure.
