'Different Thoughts In Leadership' - Nehra On Pandya's Captaincy Snub

Gujarat Titans head coach Ashish Nehra expressed no surprise over the Indian team management's decision to exclude Hardik Pandya from a leadership role for the upcoming series in Sri Lanka. This decision follows Rohit Sharma's retirement from T20Is, which had initially led to speculation that Pandya would take over as captain.

Instead, star batter Suryakumar Yadav was named captain of the Indian T20I team. Pandya was also removed from his vice-captaincy role, with Gautam Gambhir stepping in as head coach for his first assignment with the national side. Nehra, who coached Pandya at Gujarat Titans in IPL, commented on this development during an interview with SportsTak.

Nehra Speaks on Pandya's Snub

"No, I am not surprised. When it comes to cricket, these things keep happening. Yes, Hardik Pandya was vice-captain in the World Cup, but at the same time, there is a new coach who has come in. Every coach and every captain have different thoughts. At this time, his (Gambhir's) ideas are toward that direction," Nehra told SportsTak.

Chief selector Ajit Agarkar clarified during a press conference that the team management sought someone consistently available for the leadership role. He highlighted Pandya's recent struggles with fitness as a significant factor in their decision.

Nehra appreciated the clarity provided by Agarkar and Gambhir regarding Pandya's selection for just one format. He believes that despite this change, Pandya remains crucial for India's white-ball cricket strategy.

"I think Ajit Agarkar and Gautam Gambhir have made it clear, that's good. He is playing one format, 50-over also, he is playing less. Hardik Pandya, in white-ball cricket, will remain a very, very important player for Indian cricket," Nehara added.

Impact on Other Players

Nehra also noted that other players like Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul were not considered for captaincy roles either. This indicates a broader strategy by the team management to explore different leadership options.

"Not just Hardik Pandya, but when you have so many matches, there will be changes. Even Rishabh Pant has captained, KL Rahul has captained," Nehra said.

Shubman Gill's New Role

Pandya also lost his vice-captaincy role to Shubman Gill, who was appointed deputy in both T20I and ODI teams for the Sri Lanka tour. Nehra supported this decision and praised Gill's eagerness to learn and adapt across all formats of the game.

"They have made Shubman Gill in not just one format, but in all three formats. That means you are looking ahead. Shubman Gill is a work in progress. He is 24-25 years old now. He will get better as we go ahead," Nehra said.

"He has the desire to play all 3 formats; he has the heart to learn. He is not someone who thinks that whatever he is doing is right. He is not that kind of guy. Be it a youngster or an experienced player, he likes to have a discussion and learn."

Nehra emphasized that having Pandya allows India to field four fast bowlers due to his unique balance contribution to the side. He pointed out that international cricket lacks impact players like him.

"When you have him, you can have 4 fast bowlers; he brings in a different balance to the side and keep in mind that there's no impact player in international cricket," Nehra stated.

The changes reflect a strategic shift by India's cricket management as they prepare for future challenges while ensuring key players like Pandya continue contributing significantly within their roles.
