Harbhajan Singh Urges Immediate Justice For Kolkata Rape Victim In Letter To Mamata Banerjee

Former Indian cricketer and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Rajya Sabha MP Harbhajan Singh has written an open letter to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Governor CV Ananda Bose. He expressed his "deep anguish" over the delay in justice for a rape and murder victim in Kolkata.

The incident, which occurred on August 9 at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, involved the assault and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor. This crime sparked widespread outrage and protests across the nation.

Singh Seeks Justice for Rape Victim

Harbhajan Singh, known for his straightforwardness, shared the letter on his official X account (formerly Twitter). The letter also addressed the broader Indian public.

"This unspeakable act of violence, which shook the conscience of all of us, is not just a heinous crime against one individual but a grave assault on the dignity and safety of every woman in our society," stated Singh.

Singh's letter came as the nation continued to grapple with the horrifying details of the crime. The incident occurred within a medical institution, a place supposedly dedicated to healing and saving lives.

"The fact that such an atrocity could occur within the premises of a medical institution, a place dedicated to healing and saving lives, is both shocking and unacceptable," he wrote.

The former cricketer expressed frustration over the lack of "concrete action" by authorities more than a week after the crime. He noted that this delay had forced the medical community to protest despite their challenging working conditions.

Support for Medical Community

"Their protests are understood and I wholeheartedly support the medical community in their fight for their cause of justice," Singh emphasized.

In his letter, Singh urged both the West Bengal government and Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to take immediate action. He stressed that those responsible for this "vile act" must be swiftly brought to justice.

Systemic Issues Highlighted

He pointed out that such incidents have become common in news columns and television programs across India. This highlights a systemic failure to protect women and bring culprits to justice.

"This is the time when we all should come together and make such a law that if any person does such a heinous act in future, then he should keep in mind what will be the consequences," Singh stated. He addressed leaders at the highest levels, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Droupadi Murmu.

A Broader Demand for Justice

Singh's call reflects a broader demand for justice and safety for women across India. He ended his letter with a plea to restore faith in the system, insisting that action is needed now.

"The safety and dignity of women are non-negotiable," Singh declared. He urged swift punishment for perpetrators to ensure such tragedies do not occur again.

As protests continue to grow and the Supreme Court takes suo motu cognizance of the case, India watches closely. The nation demands not just justice for this victim but also systemic changes to prevent future crimes.

Harbhajan Singh's letter captures collective outrage and calls urgently for change across India.
