GT20 Canada 2024 Sees Bangla Tigers Out After Rain And Super Over Refusal
The Global T20 Canada tournament faced controversy when the Bangla Tigers Mississauga, led by Shakib Al Hasan, were eliminated despite finishing above the Toronto Nationals in the points table. The eliminator match was washed out, leading to disputes over the outcome.
Initially, the eliminator match between the Bangla Tigers and Toronto Nationals was delayed due to rain in Brampton. Persistent rain made it crucial for organisers to get a result and prepare the venue for Qualifier 2 later that day.

After several inspections, umpires and the match referee decided that a super over would be played at 7:30 pm, with the toss scheduled for 7:10 pm. However, Shakib refused to appear for the toss, leading to further complications.
The refusal of Bangla Tigers to play the super over resulted in a forfeit. Consequently, Toronto Nationals advanced to Qualifier 2. This decision was based on tournament regulations which state that playoffs will be decided by a one-over eliminator if conditions allow.
Zafir Yasin, owner of Bangla Tigers, argued that a five or ten-over contest should have been held instead of a super over. He felt this would have been a fairer way to decide the winner under such circumstances.
GLT20 CEO Joy Bhattacharjya clarified that the decision was made by match officials. He emphasised that using a super over was not unique to this situation but part of standard playoff rules.
Tournament Regulations and Outcomes
The Global T20 Canada playing conditions specify that abandoned league stage matches result in shared points. However, playoff matches are decided by a one-over eliminator if possible. This rule applied during this controversial eliminator match.
Despite their higher position in the points table, Bangla Tigers' refusal to participate in the super over allowed Toronto Nationals to progress. They went on to win Qualifier 2 against Brampton Wolves and eventually claimed the title with an 8-wicket victory over Montreal Tigers on August 11.
Match Referee's Role and Final Decision
At toss time, only Toronto Nationals' captain was present while Shakib did not show up. The match referee explained potential consequences but ultimately called off the match when Shakib remained absent.
The Tournament Technical Committee reviewed the referee's report and unanimously awarded the match to Toronto Nationals. This decision enabled them to face Brampton Wolves in Qualifier 2.
The tournament had already seen disruptions due to rain. The first playoff match ended in abandonment with Montreal Tigers advancing directly to the final while Brampton Wolves moved into Qualifier 2.
This controversy highlighted challenges faced by organisers in ensuring fair play amidst unpredictable weather conditions. Despite disagreements, tournament rules were followed as per established guidelines.
