IPL 2024: Shubman Gill And GT Penalised For Slow Over-Rate Against CSK
In a recent development during the IPL 2024, Gujarat Titans' captain, Shubman Gill, faced a hefty fine of Rs 24 lakh for the team's slow over-rate in match 59 against Chennai Super Kings at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. This incident on Friday, May 10, marked the second occasion this season that Gill and his team were penalized for not maintaining the required pace of play.
The penalty imposed on Gill was due to it being the team's second violation of the IPL's Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate offences. Consequently, each member of the playing XI, including the Impact Player, was fined Rs 6 lakh or 25 percent of their match fee, whichever amount was lower.

This was not the first time Gujarat Titans found themselves in this situation; they had previously been fined for a similar offence against the same team, Chennai Super Kings, in a match that took place on March 26. The earlier offence had resulted in a Rs 12 lakh fine for Gill. With this being their second offence, there's an increased scrutiny on the team's adherence to over-rate regulations moving forward.
According to BCCI and IPL regulations, any franchise captain will face a one-match suspension if his team is found guilty of maintaining a slow over-rate in three matches within a season. This rule puts additional pressure on Gill and his team to ensure compliance in their remaining fixtures.
Despite the off-field challenges, Gujarat Titans showcased their prowess on the field by defeating the defending champions Chennai Super Kings by 35 runs. Key performances from Gill and B Sai Sudharsan, who both scored centuries, propelled GT to a formidable total of 231 for three. The team then successfully restricted CSK to 196 for eight.
The victory breathed new life into Gujarat Titans' campaign, propelling them to eighth place on the IPL 2024 points table with 10 points from 12 matches. Meanwhile, Chennai Super Kings maintained their fourth position with 12 points from an equal number of games, holding an edge over competitors due to a superior Net Run Rate (NRR).
