Gambhir's Classy Act Ensures Pandya Feels Valued In New Indian Dressing Room

Gautam Gambhir demonstrated a commendable gesture, highlighting Hardik Pandya's leadership after India triumphed over Sri Lanka in the third T20I, securing a 3-0 series win in Pallekele on July 30.

Hardik Pandya, who served as vice-captain during India's victorious T20 World Cup 2024 campaign, was anticipated to succeed Rohit Sharma as captain following his retirement from the format. However, selectors ultimately chose Suryakumar Yadav for the role.

The decision to appoint Suryakumar Yadav as T20I captain was seen by many as a potential setback for Pandya, who had been outstanding throughout the T20 World Cup 2024. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar later clarified that Yadav was chosen due to concerns about Pandya's fitness and availability.

Despite this, Gautam Gambhir, the newly-appointed head coach of the Indian cricket team, ensured that Hardik Pandya felt appreciated within the team. After India's Super Over victory, Gambhir invited Pandya to address the team before their formal dispersal. The ODI leg of the Sri Lanka tour begins on August 2, with Hardik, Suryakumar Yadav, and Yashasvi Jaiswal not included in the squad.

Pandya praised Suryakumar Yadav's captaincy under pressure during his speech. He also highlighted the crucial partnership between Shubman Gill and Riyan Parag after India was reduced to 48/5. Additionally, he wished luck to those participating in the upcoming ODI series.

"First of all, well done! I think in batting first, we were challenged, and conditions were difficult," said Pandya. "But I think after losing those early wickets Shubman (Gill) and Riyan (Parag) the way they batted and created the partnership was brilliant."

Pandya continued by emphasising situational awareness: "When you speak about situational awareness, I think that point of time, what you both did was very important. And that gave us a platform to at least reach a decent total which our bowlers made sure bowl at the right areas."

Pandya also highlighted contributions from lower-order batsmen: "Especially, I always emphasize on the fact that the lower order has to come and chip in and I think Washi (Washington Sundar) and those 8 runs by Bishi (Ravi Bishnoi) were very important."

"As Gauti bhai mentioned," he added, "Surya, well done on making sure that the way you rotated the bowlers, making sure, showing faith in the bowlers which you gave in the last couple of overs."

Pandya concluded by praising his teammates: "That was brilliant. And as a bowling group, obviously it was fantastic everyone chipped in. Washi, well done buddy. When you win games like this, eventually it kind of takes us forward."

The speech ended on an encouraging note: "We are taking step by step. But this was definitely a right step going forward for the future and well done to all the guys who are playing ODIs; kill it! Continue!"
