Gautam Gambhir Vows Not To 'Complicate' India's Winning Cricket Strategy
India's new head coach, Gautam Gambhir, aims to keep things straightforward as he steps into his role. India recently celebrated their T20 World Cup victory, with Rahul Dravid concluding his tenure on a high note. Dravid served as head coach for two-and-a-half years, guiding the team to finals in all three formats.Gambhir's first assignment starts on July 27 with India's white-ball tour of Sri Lanka. The 42-year-old is taking on his first head coaching role after mentoring IPL teams Kolkata Knight Riders and Lucknow Super Giants. He plans to build on India's recent success by fostering trust within the team.In his initial interview as head coach, Gambhir emphasised the importance of giving players freedom. "It is very simple," he said. "It is important to give players freedom—that's what I believe in—and not have a relationship of a head coach and a player. The best relationship is one built on trust."Gambhir also stressed that he does not intend to complicate matters. "The most important thing is they'll always have my backing," he added. "I don't complicate too many things." He acknowledges that he is inheriting a highly successful team, noting India's achievements in various formats.Reflecting on his playing career, which spanned 13 years and included World Cup wins in 2007 and 2011, Gambhir shared his straightforward approach to success. "My learning has been simple—it has been all about winning," he stated. "I don't deviate from something. We are in a profession where there can be only one winner."He believes that a happy dressing room is synonymous with a winning one. "We try and play fair, we try and play hard, and try and come back in a winning dressing room and a happy dressing room," Gambhir explained.
Support Staff Role
Gambhir highlighted the crucial role of support staff in maintaining team morale. "Ultimately, it is the players' team," he said. "The support staff is there to try and get the maximum out of their potential." He acknowledged the challenges of international cricket, where only 15 players can be selected, making it essential for support staff to keep everyone content.India's T20I series against Sri Lanka kicks off on July 27 in Pallekele.
