Gautam Gambhir Reminisces About India's Heartbreaking Loss To Australia In 1992 World Cup

Gautam Gambhir reminisced about the night he cried after India narrowly lost to Australia in the 1992 World Cup. This loss, by just one run, ignited his determination to win the World Cup for India someday.

"After seeing a match, I wanted to win the World Cup for India. I remember the 1992 India-Australia World Cup game in Brisbane, which India lost by one run, and I actually remember that I cried the entire night. I have never cried like that before or after that, and I don't know why," Gambhir told Sportskeeda in an interview.

Gambhir Recalls 1992 World Cup Loss

In that rain-affected match, India was set a target of 236 runs in 47 overs. Ravi Shastri opened for India and managed to score 25 runs. His partner Kris Srikkanth was dismissed without scoring from ten balls. Sachin Tendulkar came in at number four but was out for 11 runs off 19 balls, bowled by Steve Waugh.

Captain Mohammad Azharuddin took responsibility and scored 93 runs off 102 balls. Sanjay Manjrekar contributed with a quick 47 off 42 balls before being run out. However, Ajay Jadeja could only add one run towards the end. Manoj Prabhakar and Venkatapathy Raju were both run out on the final two deliveries, resulting in India's loss by one run.

"I was an 11-year-old at that time. I cried the entire night and said that I wanted to win the World Cup for India. I said that in 1992 and I was able to fulfill that dream in 2011. I would have felt unhappy before or after that match but I didn't used to cry like that. I remember Venkatapathy Raju getting run out and India lost by one run. The match used to come early in the morning, so I used to watch that game after waking up at five in the morning, but I was never as sad before or after that game," Gambhir added.

Gambhir's Achievements

Gambhir went on to achieve his dream by winning two World Cups with India during his career. He played crucial roles in both victories: first in the 2007 T20 World Cup and then in the 2011 ODI World Cup. In both finals, he emerged as India's top scorer.

This emotional moment from his childhood became a driving force behind Gambhir's illustrious cricket career, culminating in him helping India secure two major world titles.
