Gautam Gambhir Takes Charge As India's Head Coach: Who Will Join Him?

Gautam Gambhir has been appointed as the new head coach of the Indian cricket team, as announced by the BCCI on Tuesday, July 9. The Cricket Advisory Committee, which includes Ashok Malhotra, Jatin Paranjpe, and Sulakshana Naik, unanimously recommended Gambhir for the role.

Gambhir's appointment was confirmed by BCCI secretary Jay Shah. The former Indian opener is set to take over from Rahul Dravid starting with the Sri Lanka series on July 27. Gambhir will also have the liberty to select his own coaching staff.

Abhishek Nayar is a strong contender to join Gambhir's coaching team. Nayar and Gambhir share a close bond that strengthened during their time at Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2024. Reports suggest they have already reached a verbal agreement. Nayar has mentored players like Rohit Sharma and Dinesh Karthik and is highly regarded among young cricketers.

The BCCI expressed their enthusiasm about Gambhir's new role: "The BCCI welcomes Gautam Gambhir in his role with Team India. The former Indian opener brings with him a wealth of experience and a deep understanding of the game. Known for his exceptional batting prowess and strategic acumen, Gambhir has been a pivotal figure in Indian cricket," stated the BCCI.

R Vinay Kumar is another name proposed by Gambhir for the position of bowling coach. Kumar played under Gambhir's captaincy at KKR and shares a strong rapport with him. Although Kumar is currently leading the race for this role, the BCCI plans to invite more applicants.

During Dravid's tenure, Paras Mhambrey (Bowling Coach), T. Dilip (Fielding Coach), and Vikram Rathour (Batting Coach) were part of the coaching staff but have now left after completing their terms.

Vijay Dahiya

Vijay Dahiya is also on Gambhir's radar for a coaching position. Dahiya served as an assistant coach at KKR and was part of Lucknow Super Giants when Gambhir was a mentor there. His inclusion in the backroom staff seems likely given their history together.
