Gautam Gambhir Unveils His Approach To Team Selection For India
Gautam Gambhir, India's newly appointed head coach, has outlined his selection criteria for players. He believes that players who are "good enough" should participate in all three formats of the game.
Earlier this week, Gambhir succeeded Rahul Dravid as the head coach, marking a new chapter in Indian cricket. This change coincides with the retirement of three key players from the T20I format.

Veterans Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja have retired from T20Is but will continue to play ODIs and Tests. Their departure opens up opportunities for new faces in the team.
Gambhir's approach is straightforward amid an action-packed schedule and speculation about player selections under his leadership. He emphasises that if a player is good enough, they should play across all formats.
In recent years, senior players have often been rested from certain formats to manage injuries. However, Gambhir does not support this practice. He believes that players should recover from injuries and continue playing all formats.
"I'm a very strong believer in one thing, that if you're good, you should be playing all the three formats. I've never been a big believer in injury management; you get injured, you go get recovered. As simple as it gets," Gambhir told Star Sports.
Opportunities for All Formats
Gambhir also mentioned that he does not favour selecting players for specific formats. He feels that anyone representing the country should seize every opportunity to play in all three formats.
"If you're playing all the three formats, you get injured, you go back, get recovered, but you should be playing all the three formats. I am not a big believer in identifying people that we're going to keep him for test matches or other formats," he added.
The new head coach stressed that professional cricketers have a limited career span and should aim to play as much as possible when in good form. "Professional cricketers, you've got a very small span when you're playing for your country, and you want to play as much as you can. And when you're in very good form, go ahead and play all the three formats."
This philosophy marks a shift from previous strategies where injury management often dictated player participation across different formats. Gambhir's approach aims to maximise player involvement and performance across all forms of cricket.
