Gautam Gambhir To Navigate World Cup Expectations As New India Coach
Gautam Gambhir is set to face the high expectations of winning the World Cup as he begins his tenure as India's head coach, according to former India spinner Pragyan Ojha.
Ojha highlighted that Gambhir's biggest challenge will be meeting the expectations of winning major tournaments. "I think the expectation of winning the World Cup. After the 2011 World Cup, everybody wanted Gary [Gary Kirsten] to continue after the way the team delivered. Similarly, after Rahul bhai, everybody will have the expectation from Gautam Gambhir and senior members to win the Champions Trophy and the World Cup," Ojha said during a media meet hosted by Sony Sports on Thursday.

The BCCI has announced a refreshed squad for the upcoming T20 series against Sri Lanka. Suryakumar Yadav has been named captain, with Shubman Gill as his deputy. Young talents like Yashasvi Jaiswal and Riyan Parag have also been included in the team.
Gambhir's new role will commence with this series, which includes three T20I matches followed by three ODIs. This series marks his first assignment as head coach.
Despite India's recent T20 World Cup victory under Rahul Dravid's coaching, Ojha believes Gambhir must focus on winning in other formats too. "Managing the players and the new role won't be too much worry, but winning the World Cup in the other two formats will be a big challenge. Although we won T20 World Cup, there will be huge expectations to win the Test Championship and the 2027 ODI World Cup," he added.
Ojha also emphasized preserving ODI cricket amidst its declining popularity due to T20 cricket's rise and Test cricket's enduring appeal. He noted that India has yet to play an ODI this year and will only participate in six 50-over matches before the Champions Trophy.
Importance of ODI Cricket
The former cricketer urged authorities to organise more engaging ODI series between teams to keep the format alive. He pointed out that ODIs have been neglected due to their time-consuming nature compared to shorter formats like T20s.
As Gambhir steps into his new role, he will need to navigate these challenges while aiming for success across all formats of cricket.
The journey ahead for Gambhir is filled with high expectations and significant challenges. The cricketing world will closely watch how he manages this transition and leads India towards achieving more milestones.
