Gambhir's Coaching Staff Choices For Team India Rejected By BCCI; Nayar Likely Approved
Gautam Gambhir's recommendations for the Indian cricket team's coaching staff have faced significant rejections from the BCCI. Among his suggestions, only Abhishek Nayar has received approval from the board.
The BCCI dismissed Gambhir's proposal to appoint South African legend Morne Morkel as the bowling coach. Morkel, who briefly served as Pakistan's bowling coach, has a history with Gambhir, having played together for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and worked alongside him at Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the IPL.

Additionally, Gambhir's initial choices for the bowling coach role, Vinay Kumar and Laximipathy Balaji, were also turned down by the BCCI. Both Kumar and Balaji had previously played with Gambhir at KKR.
Gambhir had also recommended Jonty Rhodes for the position of fielding coach. Rhodes and Gambhir had collaborated at LSG before Gambhir transitioned to become KKR's mentor ahead of IPL 2024.
Ryan ten Doeschate was part of KKR's coaching unit in IPL 2024 and had previously been a member of the Gambhir-led KKR squad. Despite this connection, he was not considered for a role in the Indian team’s coaching staff.
Abhishek Nayar's Approval
Abhishek Nayar, who served as KKR's assistant coach in IPL 2024, is the only one among Gambhir’s recommendations to be approved by the BCCI. Although Nayar did not play with Gambhir at KKR, he has earned respect for mentoring players like Dinesh Karthik and Shreyas Iyer. His positive relationship with Rohit Sharma likely contributed to his selection.
With these developments, it appears that Gambhir will rely on National Cricket Academy (NCA) staff for his coaching team during the upcoming white-ball tour of Sri Lanka. VVS Laxman recently accompanied them on their Zimbabwe tour.
