Gambhir Defends Kohli Amid Ponting's Concerns Over Indian Cricket Performance

Gautam Gambhir, India's head coach, criticised Ricky Ponting on November 11 for his remarks about Virat Kohli's form. Ponting had questioned Kohli's performance ahead of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Gambhir suggested that Ponting should focus on Australian cricket instead of commenting on Indian players.

Ponting, the former Australian captain, pointed out Kohli's lack of centuries in recent years. He stated that any player with only two centuries in five years might not remain in the team. This comment was made public by ICC on November 10.

Gambhir Defends Kohli Against Ponting's Critique

Kohli and Rohit Sharma are both experiencing a dip in form as they prepare to face Australia. Their recent performances have been under scrutiny after India's 0-3 series loss to New Zealand earlier this month. This has raised concerns about their readiness for the upcoming series.

Rohit has scored 588 runs from 11 matches this year, averaging 29.40 with two centuries and two fifties. In contrast, Kohli has managed only 250 runs from six matches (12 innings), averaging 22.72 with just one half-century.

Before leaving for Australia for the five-match Test series, Gambhir addressed questions about Kohli and Rohit's form. He dismissed Ponting's opinions as irrelevant to Indian cricket. Gambhir emphasised that both players have immense passion and determination to succeed for the team.

"Not at all...Ricky Ponting should think about Australian cricket, what concerns he has for Indian cricket? Virat and Rohit are incredibly tough men. They've achieved a lot for Indian cricket and they will continue to achieve a lot," Gambhir said in the press conference on Monday (November 11).

Upcoming Series Details

The upcoming series against Australia is crucial for India as they need to win at least four Tests to secure a spot in the World Test Championship Final (WTC). The first Test will be held in Perth on November 22, followed by a day-night match at Adelaide Oval from December 6 to 10.

The third Test will take place at The Gabba in Brisbane from December 14 to 18. The Boxing Day Test is scheduled at Melbourne Cricket Ground from December 26 to 30. The final Test will be at Sydney Cricket Ground from January 3 to 7, concluding an eagerly awaited series.

"They still work really hard. They're still passionate. They still want to achieve a lot more and that is something which is very important. The hunger in that dressing room is incredibly important for me and for the entire group of people as well in that dressing room. I feel there's a lot of hunger, especially after what has happened in the last series," he further added.

Rohit and his team aim for a third consecutive series win in Australia and hope to secure their third straight WTC final appearance with strong performances Down Under.
