Gambhir Requests Rohit, Kohli, Bumrah To Exit Vacation Mode For Sri Lanka ODIs
Gautam Gambhir has urged senior players Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Jasprit Bumrah to participate in the three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka starting on August 2 in Colombo.
Kohli and Bumrah are particularly focused on the Champions Trophy 2025 and the WTC final 2025. Gambhir is beginning his tenure as the head coach of the Indian cricket team with the Sri Lanka tour. He aims to work with Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli during this first assignment.

According to The Indian Express, Gambhir has requested Rohit, Kohli, and Bumrah to play in the Sri Lanka ODIs. There will be another one-month break before the home series against Bangladesh starts with the first Test on September 19. The second Test will commence on September 27, followed by three T20Is.
Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma announced their retirement from T20Is right after India won the T20I World Cup 2024. Ravindra Jadeja also retired from T20Is a day later. However, Jasprit Bumrah expressed his desire to continue playing all three formats of the game for many years.
The trio have been enjoying their breaks post India's T20 World Cup 2024 victory in Barbados on June 29. Bumrah was last seen at Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant's wedding ceremony, while Rohit and Kohli are abroad with their families.
Leadership Roles
While Rohit Sharma will continue leading India in ODI and Test formats, BCCI selectors are discussing potential candidates for T20I captaincy. Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav are emerging as top contenders for this role.
This request comes as Gambhir wants to ensure that these key players are well-prepared for upcoming challenges. Their participation in the Sri Lanka ODIs would provide valuable experience ahead of future tournaments.
The involvement of these senior players is crucial for maintaining team strength and cohesion. Their presence can significantly impact India's performance in international cricket events.
The upcoming series against Sri Lanka marks an important phase for both players and coaching staff. It sets the stage for future strategies and team dynamics under Gambhir's leadership.
