Gautam Gambhir Backs Kohli And Sharma For 2027 World Cup Involvement

India's head coach Gautam Gambhir has provided significant insights into the future of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, dismissing any predetermined end to their careers. He emphasized that both players could continue in the 50-over format and Test cricket, potentially participating in the 2027 ICC World Cup if they maintain their fitness.

During a press conference on Monday, Gambhir was questioned about the career longevity of Rohit and Virat. The coach expressed his unwavering support for the duo, highlighting their contributions on major stages like the T20 World Cup and 50-over World Cup. "I think they've shown what they can deliver in the big stage, whether it was the T20 World Cup or 50-over World Cup. One thing I can be very clear of, both those guys have a lot of cricket left in them. And more importantly with Champions Trophy and a big tour of Australia coming up, there won't be any shortage of motivation. If they can keep their fitness, the 2027 World Cup as well," Gambhir said.

Gambhir also stressed that retirement is a personal decision for each player. He expressed his full confidence in both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, stating that any team would be thrilled to have them in their lineup for as long as possible. "This is a very personal decision [retirement]. I can't say how much cricket is left to them. Ultimately it is up to the players, how much they can contribute to the team's success. But looking what what Virat and Rohit can deliver, they still have a lot of cricket. They're still World Class players and any team would want to have both of them for as long as possible," he added.

Both Kohli and Rohit retired from T20 cricket following India's triumphant T20 World Cup campaign. Rohit is set to lead the Indian team in the upcoming Sri Lanka ODIs. In T20 cricket, Suryakumar Yadav has taken over as captain from Rohit.

The former player reiterated that decisions about retirement are ultimately up to the individual players. He believes that both Virat and Rohit still have much to offer in terms of contributing to their team's success.

The possibility of seeing these veterans in action during future tournaments hinges on their ability to maintain peak physical condition. Gambhir's comments underline his belief in their enduring capabilities and potential future contributions.

The coach's remarks reflect his confidence that both players will continue to play at a high level if they remain motivated and fit.

The discussion around retirement often surfaces when players reach a certain age or milestone in their careers. However, Gambhir's statements suggest that age should not be the sole factor determining a player's career span.

In conclusion, Gambhir's update provides reassurance about the future involvement of two key figures in Indian cricket. Their continued presence will depend on their fitness levels and personal decisions regarding retirement.
