Jake Fraser-McGurk, Matthew Short Poised To Boost Australia's T20 World Cup Squad

Jake Fraser-McGurk and Matthew Short are poised to join the Australian squad as travelling reserves for the T20 World Cup. Fraser-McGurk, who had an impressive stint with Delhi Capitals (DC) in IPL 2024, finished as the third-highest run-scorer for his team. He amassed 330 runs in nine matches, averaging 36.66 with a strike rate of 234.04.

Despite his performance, Fraser-McGurk missed out on the 15-member provisional squad due to Australia's established top three: David Warner, Travis Head, and captain Mitchell Marsh. Batting all-rounder Short, who played nine of Australia's last 14 T20Is and opened in five of them, was also the Big Bash League player of the tournament for two consecutive seasons.

Fraser-McGurk, Short to Join Australia Squad

George Bailey, Australia's chair of selectors, initially suggested that only one reserve would travel to the Caribbean. However, it appears that both Fraser-McGurk and Short will be included due to their current form. The Australian squad will depart for the Caribbean on Thursday for a training camp in Trinidad, featuring practice matches against Namibia and West Indies on May 28 and 30.

Key players such as Head, Cameron Green, Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, and Glenn Maxwell will join the squad later as they are committed to playing in the IPL playoffs. Other players like Marsh, Warner, Ashton Agar, Josh Hazlewood, Adam Zampa, Matthew Wade, Nathan Ellis, and Josh Inglis have had limited cricket action since the end of the Australian domestic summer in March.

Training and Preparation

Under ICC rules, only those named in the 15-man squad can participate in warm-up fixtures. Marsh, Hazlewood, Inglis, Zampa, and Agar have been training in Brisbane over the past fortnight along with Short. Marsh has reportedly recovered from his hamstring injury but has yet to resume bowling.

The Australian team will begin their World Cup campaign against Oman in Barbados on June 5.
