Hardik Pandya Misses Out On India's T20I Captaincy Due To Fitness Concerns
Ajit Agarkar, the chief selector of the Indian Cricket Team, has disclosed that fitness issues were the primary reason for not appointing Hardik Pandya as the captain of the national T20I team.
Earlier this month, Suryakumar Yadav was named captain for India's T20I series against Sri Lanka. He replaced Rohit Sharma, who recently retired from the format. This decision came as a surprise to many, given that Hardik Pandya was expected to take over.

Despite being vice-captain and stepping in during Rohit's absence, Pandya was not retained even as vice-captain for the Sri Lanka tour. Instead, Shubman Gill was appointed deputy in both T20I and ODI squads.
Rumours suggested that Pandya's unavailability for the ODI series influenced his non-selection as captain. Agarkar hinted at this but emphasised fitness concerns as a valid reason for not naming Pandya as captain or vice-captain.
"Hardik is always an important player for us. Those skillsets are hard to find. Fitness has been a challenge with him. Hopefully, his performances are more important than anything else," said Agarkar in the press conference.
Suryakumar Yadav's Captaincy Merits
Agarkar elaborated on why Suryakumar Yadav deserved the captaincy role. He praised Yadav as one of the best batters in T20I and someone likely to play all matches. "Suryakumar Yadav was made captain because he is one of deserving candidates. He is one of best T20I batters. You want a captain who is likely to play all the games," Agarkar added.
Shubman Gill's Vice-Captaincy Role
The chief selector also explained why Shubman Gill was chosen as vice-captain for the upcoming tour. "Shubman Gill is the guy we feel is a three-format player. Has shown a lot more qualities over the last year or so, that's what we hear from the dressing room," he said.
"He has shown some decent leadership qualities. We want to try and give him the experience, though there are no guarantees," said Agarkar.
Agarkar stressed that while fitness remains a concern for Pandya, his skills are invaluable to the team. The selectors aim to have leaders who can consistently participate in matches, ensuring stability and performance.
