England Announces Squad For 1st Test Against Sri Lanka With Key Changes

England has announced their playing XI for the first Test against Sri Lanka, which begins on Wednesday, August 21, at Old Trafford in Manchester. Dan Lawrence and Matthew Potts have been included in the squad to replace the injured Ben Stokes and Zak Crawley.

The England Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed that wicketkeeper-batter Ollie Pope will lead the team in Stokes' absence, with Harry Brook named as the vice-captain. The first Test match will run from August 21 to August 25.

England's New Lineup for Sri Lanka Test

Stokes is out for the rest of the English summer due to a left hamstring tear sustained during The Hundred. This injury means he will miss both matches against Sri Lanka. Crawley is also sidelined after injuring his finger while fielding during the West Indies series.

"England Men have announced their XI for the first Rothesay Men's Test match against Sri Lanka, starting at Emirates Old Trafford on Wednesday, 21 August," stated ECB. "With Ben Stokes (hamstring) and Zak Crawley (finger) both missing through injury, Durham seamer Matthew Potts returns to the side for the first time since June 2023. Surrey batter Dan Lawrence will open the batting in Crawley's absence."

Lawrence will partner with Ben Duckett at the top of the order. The middle order comprises Pope, Joe Root, and Brook. Jamie Smith retains his role as wicketkeeper after debuting earlier this year.

Shoaib Bashir is selected as the sole specialist spinner. Potts joins Chris Woakes, Gus Atkinson, and Mark Wood to form a four-man pace attack for England in this series opener.

The ECB statement also highlighted that Harry Brook has been appointed vice-captain for this three-match series. "Yorkshire middle-order batter Harry Brook has been named vice-captain for the three-match series and will support captain Ollie Pope," it added.

Upcoming Matches

The second Test of this series is scheduled to start on August 29 at Lord's. The final match will be held at Kennington Oval beginning September 6.

England recently achieved a 3-0 series sweep against the West Indies, moving up to sixth place in the World Test Championship standings. They aim to maintain this momentum against Sri Lanka.
