England Overcomes Early Hurdles To Dominate Second Test Against West Indies

Jamie Smith's outstanding performance on day two of the third Test against West Indies at Edgbaston put England in a commanding position. The wicket-keeper-batter scored an impressive 95 off 109 balls, narrowly missing his maiden century in just his third Test match.

England's chase of the Windies' first-innings total of 282 began nervously. Early wickets of Ollie Pope (10) and Harry Brook (two) left them struggling at 54-5. However, Joe Root (87) and Ben Stokes (54) steadied the innings with a crucial 115-run partnership.

England Leads in Test vs West Indies

Smith's near-century, combined with Chris Woakes' valuable 62, propelled England to a total of 376, giving them a 94-run lead. This strong batting display was pivotal in establishing their dominance in the match.

The West Indies' response was immediately disrupted by Chris Woakes, who dismissed skipper Kraigg Braithwaite for a duck in the first over. Gus Atkinson then claimed Kirk McKenzie for eight runs. Opener Mikyle Louis had a lucky escape when Ben Stokes dropped a simple catch, allowing the visitors to reach stumps at 33-2.

Joe Root continued to impress with another stellar batting performance for England. Despite a close call in the second over where he could have been dismissed if the Windies had reviewed an lbw appeal, Root capitalised on his fortune. His score of 87 took him past the milestone of 12,000 Test runs, making him only the second England player to achieve this feat after Alastair Cook.

Root's innings also saw him surpass Brian Lara to become seventh on the all-time leading Test run-scorers list. Although he missed out on what would have been his 33rd Test century, his contribution was significant in bolstering England's position.

The day's play highlighted England's resilience and ability to recover from early setbacks. With key contributions from Smith and Root, they have set themselves up well for the remainder of the match against West Indies.
