T20 World Cup 2024: England's Road To Super 8s Qualification Explained

Scotland improved their chances of reaching the Super Eights of the T20 Cricket World Cup by defeating Oman by seven wickets in Antigua.

This victory moved Scotland to the top of Group B with 5 points in three matches as they remain unbeaten in the competition.

England's T20 WC Super 8s Qualification Path

Pratik Athavale scored 54 off 40 balls, but Oman faced setbacks as Zeeshan Maqsood and Khalid Kail fell cheaply. Safyaan Sharif took two wickets but conceded 40 runs. Brad Wheal's four overs yielded 1-19, and Mark Watt's four overs cost 25 runs with one wicket. Ayaan Khan's unbeaten 41 off 39 balls offered some resistance for Oman as they posted 150 runs. Brandon McMullen's unbeaten 61 off 31 balls guided Scotland to victory within 13.1 overs. His innings included nine boundaries and two sixes.

As Scotland won, it has come to a huge blow for England. The English boys started off with a washed out match against Scotland and then lost at the hands of Australia. At the moment, England have only 1 point in two matches, while Scotland have 5, the most England can reach in the group stages.

England are currently placed 4th in the Group B points table. They have a Net Run Rate (NRR) of -1.800 and have two matches remaining against Oman (June 13) and Namibia (June 15). Scotland has the NRR of +2.164 and they play Australia in the final match on June 16.

Although England is in trouble at the moment, they can still qualify for the Super Eights. But to ensure that, England will need a helping hand from Australia.

England's two matches will be before Scotland. Hence Jos Buttler and his team will have to win by big margins against Oman and Namibia and thus better their NRR. In that case, if Scotland is beaten at the hands of Australia, then England will qualify for the Super Eights.
