England Surpasses New Zealand In WTC 2023-25 Standings Following Dominant Second Test Victory

England surged past New Zealand in the World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 rankings after a commanding 323-run victory in the second Test of their three-match series at Wellington's Basin Reserve on December 8. This win elevated England to fifth place, surpassing New Zealand in the standings.

Under Ben Stokes' leadership, England secured an unassailable lead in the series with consecutive victories against the Black Caps. Centuries from Harry Brook and Joe Root, along with exceptional bowling by Brydon Carse, Gus Atkinson, Stokes, and Chris Woakes, were pivotal in their success.

England Moves Ahead of New Zealand in WTC Standings

New Zealand faced a daunting target of 583 runs in the fourth innings but could only muster 259 runs. Tom Blundell's century was insufficient as other Kiwi batsmen failed to contribute significantly to the chase.

Earlier in the match, England relied on Brook's century to score 280 before dismissing New Zealand for just 125. Carse and Atkinson each took four wickets. England then declared at 427/6 after Root's 36th century and bowled out New Zealand for 259.

This comprehensive victory propelled England to fifth place in the WTC standings with a win percentage of 45.24%. They have recorded 11 wins, one draw, and nine losses across 21 matches. Meanwhile, New Zealand dropped to sixth place with a point percentage of 44.23%, having won six matches and lost seven out of 13.

Both teams are no longer contenders for the WTC final but aim to conclude their cycle positively when they meet again next week. The upcoming matches will also feature South Africa, Sri Lanka, India, and Australia as they continue their pursuit of a spot in the final.
