Psychologist David Young Rejoins England Cricket Team For T20 World Cup 2024

David Young, the Manchester City psychologist, has rejoined the England cricket team as they gear up for the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024, set to take place in the USA and West Indies in June.

Young, who was instrumental in England's 2019 World Cup triumph, returns after a successful period with Manchester City, who recently clinched their fourth consecutive Premier League title under his psychological guidance.

David Young Back with England Team

The Premier League champions have benefited from Young's expertise, which he previously applied to the England cricket team from 2016 to 2020. This period included notable successes, such as the 2019 World Cup win.

For the upcoming T20 World Cup and the T20I series against Pakistan, Young will join the England team as part of the support staff. His return is seen as a strategic move to enhance team dynamics and communication.

England white-ball coach Matthew Mott has expressed confidence in Young's impact, emphasizing his crucial role in refining team communication. Mott aims to leverage Young's insights to ensure effective message delivery within the team.

"He's previously been with the team and he's already been a great ally in messages back to me, making sure my messages are clear," Mott said.

"It's always good to have someone who's a little bit removed from the squad to make sure you're landing your messages... He's still doing other roles but we've got him for this series, and the start of the World Cup as well."

The appointment comes at a time when England is looking to revamp its approach following a less than stellar performance in the recent Men's Cricket World Cup in India.

Mott emphasized the need for a shift from a "business as usual" mindset to one that fosters openness and mutual support among team members.

"When you've had the kick in the pants like we've had, you can't just go 'business as usual'. You have to redefine how you go as a team," Mott said about England's returns in India. "As a group, we've made a commitment to be a bit more open in and around our training sessions, to help each other out a bit more."

"In India, all of us were guilty of being a bit insular, and trying to problem-solve ourselves. We've made a commitment to open up and be a bit more vulnerable as a group so that we're helping each other."

Commitment to Improvement

The team has committed to being more vulnerable and supportive, aiming to counteract the insularity that was evident during their campaign in India. This new direction, spearheaded by Young's psychological expertise, is poised to invigorate the England cricket team as they gear up for the challenges ahead.

Mott's reflections on the team's recent experiences and the strategic changes underway underscore a resolve to learn and evolve. With Young's guidance, England aims to cultivate a more cohesive and resilient team spirit. The focus on open communication and vulnerability is a testament to the team's commitment to improvement and success in upcoming tournaments.
