England Advances To Seventh In World Test Championship Standings After Defeating West Indies

England climbed three places to seventh in the World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 standings after a decisive 241-run victory over West Indies in the second Test at Trent Bridge, Nottingham, on Sunday, July 21.

The hosts secured the series win late on the fourth day. Spinner Shoaib Bashir took five wickets for 41 runs, marking his third career five-wicket haul. This helped England bowl out West Indies for 143 while chasing a target of 385.

England's next challenge is the third and final Test against West Indies at Edgbaston Cricket Ground in Birmingham, starting on Friday, July 26. Meanwhile, West Indies aim to regain form when they host South Africa for a two-Test series next month.

Ben Stokes-led England faced a tough first innings against Kraigg Brathwaite's West Indies, conceding a 41-run lead. However, Joe Root, Harry Brook, and Shoaib Bashir turned the game around for the hosts, securing an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.

This victory allowed England to surpass South Africa, Bangladesh, and West Indies in the updated World Test Championship points table.

The lower half of the WTC table might see more changes next month with Pakistan hosting Bangladesh and England playing against Sri Lanka.

The top team India will resume their WTC campaign at home against Bangladesh in September. Here are the scheduled WTC matches from July to September.

The recent defeat dropped West Indies to ninth place with a win-loss percentage of just 22.22%. In contrast, England now holds a points percentage of 31.25%, giving them a chance to overtake Pakistan for sixth place with a series whitewash.

If successful in their upcoming matches, England could move closer to the top five teams in the standings.
