Dinesh Karthik Comes Out Of Retirement To Play For Paarl Royals In SA20 League 2025

Dinesh Karthik has decided to come out of retirement and will be playing for Paarl Royals in the SA20 league in South Africa. The third edition of this tournament is scheduled to start on January 9.

Karthik's return to professional cricket with Paarl Royals was announced just a day after he was named the T20 league's ambassador. The 39-year-old was signed by the Royals following Jos Buttler's withdrawal from the upcoming season due to his commitments with the England national team.

"I am delighted to be joining the Paarl Royals team which oozes a lot of experience, quality and potential. I am certainly looking forward to joining the group and contributing to what should be an exciting season," said Karthik, who was appointed as the league ambassador a day earlier.

Royals' Director of Cricket, Kumar Sangakkara, expressed his excitement about Karthik's inclusion. "Dinesh has served as one of the modern-day greats for India in white-ball cricket, and his wealth of experience will contribute to the making of our side," he said.

"I have so many fond memories of playing in and visiting South Africa, and when this opportunity came about, I couldn't say no because of how special it would be to come back to playing competitive cricket and win this incredible competition with the Royals," said Karthik, who has played 180 matches for India across all three formats.

Recent Career Highlights

Karthik announced his retirement from all forms of cricket in June this year after playing for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in IPL 2024. He was recently appointed as a mentor-cum-batting coach by RCB.

His last competitive T20 outing was for RCB in IPL 2024, where he scored 326 runs in 14 matches at a strike rate of 187.36. His last match for India was against Bangladesh during the T20 World Cup in Australia in 2022.

Team Dynamics

At Paarl Royals, Karthik will join other international stars like skipper David Miller, Joe Root, Lungi Ngidi, Andile Phehlukwayo, and Kwena Maphaka. Sangakkara added that Karthik has always been an asset for teams he's represented due to his approach to the game and impact on matches.

Karthik had also expressed his desire to be part of India's T20 World Cup squad during IPL 2024. However, he now looks forward to contributing significantly to Paarl Royals' campaign in SA20 2025.
