Delhi Capitals Not Out Of IPL 2024 Playoff Race, Says Bowling Coach

Following a 40-run defeat to Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), Delhi Capitals (DC) now faces a challenging path to the IPL 2024 playoffs. Despite the setback, DC's bowling coach, James Hopes, remains optimistic about the team's chances to secure a spot in the top four. The loss at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Sunday (May 12) pushed DC down to the sixth position, complicating their playoff aspirations.

Choosing to field first proved costly for DC as they allowed RCB to post a formidable total of 187, partly due to a series of fielding errors early in the game. The chase saw DC crumbling, with captain Axar Patel being the lone warrior, scoring a valiant fifty in vain. Key contributions from RCB's Rajat Patidar and Will Jacks, who were given reprieves through dropped catches, further dented DC's hopes.

DC's Playoff Hopes Alive in IPL 2024

Hopes pointed out that these missed opportunities in the field allowed RCB to reach a total that was just beyond reach. "They got one too many and we dropped four catches and had we taken them we could have probably restricted them to 160-165. But that's fine and if you are not going to put it together with the bat you are not going to win too many games in this tournament," he explained during the post-match press conference.

With 12 points from 13 matches, DC now needs a significant victory against Lucknow Super Giants on Tuesday (May 14) to keep their playoff dreams alive. Hopes is banking on the team's performance at their home ground in Delhi, where high scores have been a common occurrence this season. "We have to win big now. But fortunately, we are going back to Delhi where big scores have been the norm for the season. So, we are going to ask them to put a big score on the board and keep them a fair way below us to have any chance to advance in this tournament," he stated confidently.

However, Hopes also acknowledged the missed opportunity against RCB as a critical moment in their campaign. "But today was our chance to really get into the mix for playing finals, and now we've left it up to fight, which you don't really want to do in this tournament." This candid admission highlights the uphill battle DC faces as they strive for a playoff berth amidst intense competition.
