Delhi Capitals Face Key Captaincy Decision For IPL 2025: KL Rahul Or Axar Patel?

Delhi Capitals (DC) are set to have a new leader for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season. This change follows Rishabh Pant's move to Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) during the IPL 2025 Mega Auction. With Pant's departure, DC is now on the lookout for a new captain.

The team has several potential candidates for the captaincy role. They acquired two former IPL captains, KL Rahul and Faf Du Plessis, during the recent auction. Both players bring valuable leadership experience from their previous teams, Lucknow Super Giants and Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

Axar Patel is another strong contender for the captaincy. He was one of four players retained by DC before the auction, which took place on November 24 and 25. Axar has been with the franchise since 2019 and served as vice-captain in the last cycle.

KL Rahul joined DC after a competitive bidding process at the auction, where he was secured for Rs 14 crores. His acquisition adds an opener, captain, and wicketkeeper-batter option to the team. Meanwhile, Axar's retention highlights his consistent performance over the years.

Parth Jindal, co-owner of DC, discussed the captaincy options between Rahul and Axar. He mentioned that it's too early to decide on a captain and that further discussions will take place later. "It's a bit premature to talk about the captaincy," Jindal said.

Jindal elaborated on his relationship with KL Rahul: "I spoke to KL but haven't met him yet. I know him very well personally." The decision will involve input from both the coaching staff and co-owner Kiran Grandhi.

While many expect Rahul to be named captain with Axar as his deputy, there's also a possibility of Axar taking on the full-time role. He has previously led when David Warner and Rishabh Pant were unavailable.

Rahul has consistently performed well with the bat despite past leadership pressures, scoring over 400 runs each season except one. However, some believe he might benefit from not having captaincy responsibilities.

Experienced Leadership Choices

If DC opts for an experienced leader, Du Plessis could be considered due to his successful tenure as RCB's skipper over three seasons. However, if they prefer an Indian captain, both Axar and Rahul remain strong choices.

The decision on who will lead DC in IPL 2025 remains open-ended at this point. The team has ample time to evaluate their options before making a final call on their new captain.
