Delhi Capitals' Potential Retention List For IPL 2025 Auction: Key Players To Watch

Delhi Capitals (DC) concluded their IPL 2024 league stage with a win over Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), but they finished outside the top four, leaving them with slim chances for playoff qualification due to a negative Net Run Rate (NRR).

After topping the table in 2021 and reaching the second qualifier, Delhi Capitals have not qualified for the playoffs since the 2022 season following the last mega auction. Ahead of the 2022 IPL Mega Auction, DC retained skipper Rishabh Pant, Axar Patel, Prithvi Shaw, and Anrich Nortje. Now, after three disappointing seasons, DC faces crucial decisions for their retentions ahead of the next mega auction.

Delhi Capitals' IPL 2025 Retentions

The IPL 2025 auction will be a significant event, with teams reportedly allowed only four retentions like previous mega auctions. However, franchise owners have requested the BCCI to permit up to eight retentions per team. While there is no official confirmation on the number of retentions allowed, it is likely that each team can retain a minimum of four players. Additionally, a Right To Match (RTM) card may be available for every team.

DC will need to make tough choices on who to release and retain before the IPL 2025 Mega Auction, which could take place between December 2024 and February 2025. Rishabh Pant, as captain, is expected to be the first retention for DC. The decision on other players like David Warner, Mitchell Marsh, Shai Hope, Tristan Stubbs, Jake Fraser-McGurk, Anrich Nortje, Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, Ishant Sharma, Mukesh Kumar, and Khaleel Ahmed will be crucial.

Kuldeep Yadav has been performing well in recent years and is likely to be retained alongside Axar Patel. These three are expected to be the Indian players retained by DC before the next auction. Mukesh Kumar and Khaleel Ahmed might be considered during the auction, while Prithvi Shaw's tenure with the franchise may have ended.

The biggest challenge for DC will be deciding on one other retention among overseas players. David Warner's future is uncertain as he plans to retire from international cricket. Mitch Marsh could be a tempting option; however, DC may prioritise two other players.

DC might retain either Tristan Stubbs or Jake Fraser-McGurk and use an RTM card for the other during the auction. Sourav Ganguly, DC's director of cricket, has hinted at retaining Fraser-McGurk. "I am sure he (Fraser-McGurk) will be up and ready. Teams will want him. We (DC) will want him for us in the future because he is a game-changer. That's what we need in this format," Ganguly said during DC's last match.
