David Warner Bids Farewell To International Cricket Post T20 World Cup Exit

David Warner's retirement from international cricket was confirmed after Australia's exit from the T20 World Cup 2024 in the Super Eight stage on June 24.

Warner had previously announced his retirement from Tests and ODIs earlier this year. He declared that the T20 World Cup 2024 would be his final international assignment for Australia, but it did not end on a high note for the veteran opener.

Warner Retires from International Cricket

In his last international match, Warner was dismissed for 6 runs off 6 balls by Arshdeep Singh. Suryakumar Yadav took a diving catch at first slip to send Warner back to the dugout in his final innings.

The southpaw made a remarkable debut with 89 runs from 43 balls against South Africa in his first T20I match. Over 110 matches, he scored 3277 runs, including a century against Pakistan in 2019, making him the third Australian to score centuries in all three formats of the game.

Despite stepping away from international cricket, Warner is expected to continue playing franchise cricket for at least another year. He is reportedly close to rejoining Sydney Thunder for next season's Big Bash and may participate in other T20 leagues.

Warner has left open the possibility of returning for next year's Champions Trophy. However, this seems unlikely as he played his last ODI during Australia's successful 2023 campaign in India.

Following a 24-run loss to India, Australia needed Bangladesh to defeat Afghanistan in the final Super Eight match. Bangladesh nearly achieved this, but Rashid Khan's team defended a total of 114, knocking Australia out of the tournament with their win.

Warner's international career ended gradually. He announced that his final Test would be against Pakistan in early 2024 when he also confirmed his ODI retirement. Now, with his T20I retirement, he has concluded his illustrious 15-year international career.

Future Prospects

Warner played for Delhi Capitals last season but is unlikely to be retained by the franchise for next season. This could see him entering the mega auction for IPL 2025.

While Warner's international career has come to an end, fans can still look forward to seeing him play in various T20 leagues around the world. His aggressive batting style will continue to entertain cricket enthusiasts globally.
