CSK Faces New Match-Fixing Allegations From Lalit Modi Against N Srinivasan Regarding IPL Auction

Chennai Super Kings (CSK), the five-time champions of the Indian Premier League (IPL), are currently embroiled in controversy. This time, the focus is on allegations made by former IPL chairman Lalit Modi against CSK owner N Srinivasan. Modi accuses Srinivasan of manipulating the IPL auction before the 2009 season to secure Andrew Flintoff for CSK.

Lalit Modi, who has had a contentious relationship with Srinivasan, shared these claims during an appearance on YouTuber Raj Shamani's podcast, Figuring Out. He openly discussed the alleged behind-the-scenes activities during the 2009 auction. "Auction rigging. I gave Flintoff to Srinivasan. Yes, we did. No doubts about it; every team knew about it," Modi stated during the podcast.

CSK's Fresh Match-Fixing Allegations Explained

According to Modi, there was an arrangement to ensure no other team would bid for Flintoff, leading to his acquisition by CSK for $1.55 million. Despite this controversial purchase, Flintoff's performance with CSK was underwhelming. He played only three matches, scoring 62 runs and taking two wickets before exiting the IPL.

Modi also accused Srinivasan of using his influence within the BCCI to manipulate umpiring decisions in favour of CSK. He claimed that Srinivasan frequently changed umpires at the last minute for CSK matches, allegedly bringing in Chennai-based umpires to officiate. Modi described this as "indirect fixing," noting a pattern of Chennai umpires being assigned to CSK games.

The allegations have reignited tensions between Modi and Srinivasan, which have been simmering for years due to their past conflicts. CSK has faced controversies before, including the 2013 IPL spot-fixing scandal that resulted in a two-year suspension for the franchise in 2016 and 2018.

Despite these issues, CSK remains one of the most successful teams in IPL history under MS Dhoni's leadership. They have won five IPL titles, with their latest victory coming in 2023 after defeating Gujarat Titans in a thrilling final.

Looking Ahead: The 2025 Season

As they prepare for the 2025 IPL season, CSK has assembled a strong squad following the mega auction. With Ruturaj Gaikwad leading and MS Dhoni still guiding them, they are among the favourites for another title run. However, these new allegations may add drama as they approach the upcoming season.

The ongoing controversies highlight both challenges and successes for CSK as they navigate their future in IPL cricket while dealing with past and present issues.
