Chennai Super Kings Utilises R Ashwin's Versatility For IPL 2025 Success
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) head coach Stephen Fleming shared his enthusiasm about Ravichandran Ashwin's return to the team for IPL 2025. The experienced spinner was bought for Rs 9.75 crore during the auction. CSK aims to enhance their squad with players whose skills match the Chepauk pitch, known for its slow and low turn.
Fleming praised Ashwin's versatility and experience, highlighting his potential contributions with both ball and bat. "He has still got a very good skill set but the bowlers numbers are fantastic, hes obviously towards the latter part of his career but the experience that he brings is handy with the bat and we think we can use him in a number of ways," Fleming stated.

Ashwin's history with CSK includes title wins in 2010 and 2011. His return marks a homecoming after playing for other IPL teams like Kings XI Punjab, now Punjab Kings, Rising Pune Supergiants, Delhi Capitals, and Rajasthan Royals. Alongside Ashwin, CSK acquired Afghanistan spinner Noor Ahmad for Rs 10 crore.
Noor previously played for Gujarat Titans in the IPL. Fleming explained this move as part of a strategy to strengthen their bowling options, especially in middle overs. "The choice of Noor Ahmed was looking more at the middle to attack, so if we do get turning conditions, then we've got an opportunity to keep taking wickets," he said.
CSK also showed interest in New Zealand's Rachin Ravindra, surprised by the lack of competition from other teams. Ravindra's recent performances have been impressive, particularly in Test cricket. "Yeah we were, we thought that Rachin, given his success in the Test series that often counts the performances leading up to an IPL but we obviously experienced the IPL with us last year," Fleming noted.
Fleming sees potential in Ravindra's development at CSK. "To pick him up at what I think is a low price and continue his development, he could be a player with that skill set," he said. Ravindra shares similarities with Ravindra Jadeja's role in the team but offers future opportunities as his skills evolve.
Fleming elaborated on CSK's approach to bowling tactics, emphasizing specificity in taking wickets. "Weve got Matheesha Pathirana at the end which is the death aspect and weve just identified that the way the games going, your bowling has to be really specific and you have to take wickets to slow teams down," he added.
CSK's strategic acquisitions aim to bolster their squad with versatile players suited to their game plan. By focusing on specific bowling tactics and nurturing emerging talent like Rachin Ravindra, CSK hopes to enhance their performance in IPL 2025.
