CSK To Decide On Retaining MS Dhoni For IPL 2025 Based On BCCI's Retention Rule Outcome
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) face several decisions before the IPL 2025 Mega Auctions, including the future of former captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni. The veteran wicketkeeper-batter has not disclosed his retirement plans, indicating he will decide in the coming months.
The 43-year-old has consistently responded with "definitely not" when asked if this was his last IPL as a player. However, IPL 2024 might be his final season unless specific conditions are met for him to continue playing regularly.

According to Cricbuzz, Dhoni's participation in IPL 2025 hinges on the outcome of an upcoming meeting between the BCCI and IPL franchise owners on July 31. His future at CSK does not depend on fitness or form but rather on retention policies.
Dhoni has already informed franchise owner N Srinivasan about his intentions. CSK will retain him only if the number of retentions is increased to five or six, rather than the four currently suggested by the BCCI.
Earlier reports indicate that IPL franchises want changes in the retention policy, either expanding it or abolishing it entirely while keeping Right To Match (RTM) for eight players at the auction. A decision on this matter is expected soon.
Despite knee issues, Dhoni's participation in the next IPL may not solely depend on his fitness. He has already prepared for the future by handing over captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad. CSK fans hope to see their legend play again if the impact player rule remains for next season.
If only four players can be retained before the IPL 2025 Mega Auction, CSK will likely keep Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ravindra Jadeja, Matheesha Pathirana, and Shivam Dube. Thus, Dhoni's future with CSK depends on BCCI's decision regarding retention rules.
