Colin Munro Announces Retirement From International Cricket

New Zealand's Colin Munro, a name synonymous with explosive batting, has decided to hang up his boots from international cricket. This announcement was made public on Friday, May 10, marking the end of an illustrious career that saw Munro donning the Black Caps jersey across 123 matches. His journey in international cricket included a single Test, 57 One-Day Internationals (ODIs), and 65 Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is).

Munro's last appearance for New Zealand was in a T20I match against India at Bay Oval in 2020. Throughout his career, he amassed over 3,000 runs and took seven wickets. Notably, Munro retires as New Zealand's sixth-highest run-scorer in T20Is, with 1,724 runs at an average of 31 and an impressive strike rate of 156.4. He also holds the record for the most T20 international centuries by a New Zealander, with three to his name.

Munro Retires from Cricket

Since his debut during the 2012-13 South Africa tour, Munro made significant contributions to New Zealand cricket, especially in limited-overs formats. He was a vital part of the Kiwi squads for both the T20 and ODI World Cups from 2014 to 2019. Among his record-setting performances are the fastest T20 century by a New Zealander, achieved in just 47 balls against West Indies in 2018, and the quickest T20 half-century by a New Zealander, scored in 14 balls against Sri Lanka in 2016.

Reflecting on his decision to retire, Munro expressed immense pride in representing his country. "Playing for the BLACKCAPS has always been the biggest achievement in my playing career," he stated. He further added that wearing the New Zealand jersey was a source of immense pride and that retiring was a decision made at the right time, coinciding with the announcement of the New Zealand squad for the T20 World Cup.

One of Munro's career highlights was participating in the team's journey to the 2019 World Cup final in England, an experience he shared with his family and teammates. Although stepping away from international cricket, Munro plans to continue showcasing his aggressive batting style in franchise cricket leagues worldwide.

Over his career in the Indian Premier League (IPL), Munro has played for three franchises: Mumbai Indians, Kolkata Knight Riders, and Delhi Capitals. In his IPL tenure, he participated in 13 matches and scored 177 runs at a strike rate of 125.

Munro's retirement marks the end of an era for New Zealand cricket. His contributions on the field have left an indelible mark on the sport, and while fans will miss his presence in international matches, they can look forward to witnessing his prowess in leagues around the globe.
