Yorkshire's Colin Graves On Not Personally Apologising To Azeem Rafiq
Yorkshire Cricket Club's newly ratified chairman, Colin Graves, faced scrutiny during a recent session with the Culture, Media and Sport Committee. The focus was on his approach to addressing past racism incidents at the club, notably those involving former player Azeem Rafiq. Despite issuing a public apology last month for any racism experienced at Yorkshire during his previous tenure from 2002 to 2015, Graves admitted he had not personally reached out to Rafiq.
During the session held on February 20, 2024, committee member John Nicolson questioned Graves on his decision not to directly apologize to Rafiq. This inquiry comes after Rafiq's impactful testimony in 2021 about the discrimination he faced during his time at Yorkshire, which prompted significant changes within the club's leadership and broader initiatives for diversity in cricket by the England and Wales Cricket Board.

Graves explained his stance by stating he did not find it appropriate at the time to contact Rafiq directly. He emphasized that his apology extended to Rafiq and anyone else who had suffered discrimination or racism at the club. However, when pressed further by Nicolson on whether his decision was due to being too busy, Graves clarified that it was not a matter of being preoccupied with other tasks.
Rafiq, whose allegations in 2020 shed light on the racial discrimination within Yorkshire Cricket Club, has not accepted Graves' general apology. His experiences and subsequent testimony have been pivotal in driving the conversation and actions against racism in cricket forward.
The session also served as an opportunity for the committee to discuss with Graves and outgoing chair Harry Chathli about future plans for Yorkshire CCC and efforts to combat racism and discrimination within the sport.
This development marks another chapter in the ongoing efforts to address and rectify issues of racism within cricket, highlighting the complexities of reconciling past grievances while striving for a more inclusive future in the sport.
