Chris Woakes Sets Sights On Leading Role For England In Ashes

Chris Woakes is eyeing a prominent role in the Ashes series but remains open to various possibilities after stepping into the senior seamer position following James Anderson's retirement. Anderson, England's top wicket-taker, concluded his career with his 188th Test match in a victory over the West Indies at Lord's this week.

In the upcoming second Test at Trent Bridge, where Woakes might earn his 50th cap, he will also be the senior figure in the England dressing room. However, Woakes' performance in overseas Tests has been less impressive, taking only 36 wickets at an average of 58.11 compared to his home record of 114 wickets at 22.04. This disparity leaves him uncertain about his role as an opener in Australia next year.

Woakes Eyes Ashes Leading Role

"I just don't rule anything out," Woakes stated. "It'd be hard for me to just stand here and say I'll be the opening bowler in that Ashes—obviously my away record probably isn't as good as my home."

Woakes emphasised that he prefers to focus on immediate goals rather than looking too far ahead. "I've always looked throughout my England career as just looking at the very next event, the very next game, the very next series and trying to be in the best shape possible for that game, that series," he explained. "I think as soon as you start looking too far ahead, you get caught up in it."

England captain Ben Stokes is now concentrating on integrating younger talents into the team. Gus Atkinson made a remarkable debut by taking 12 wickets against the West Indies. With Stokes aiming for success in the Ashes, Woakes is eager to contribute while also mentoring emerging players.

Mentoring New Talent

"You're going to see a lot more new players coming into the team or new bowlers and give guys opportunity, which is obviously what's required to move forward," Woakes added. He acknowledged that his role might change if given the new ball since he has mostly come on first change throughout his career.

"Whenever there is a new guy coming into the team, you still try and pass on a little bit of knowledge, and I've been around for long enough to be able to hopefully do that," said Woakes. "Maybe I need to do that a little bit more now as Stu and Jim have finished, but particularly on the field, maybe more so than off it."

As England transitions towards nurturing younger talent under Stokes' leadership, Woakes' experience will be invaluable both on and off the field. His willingness to adapt and mentor will play a crucial role in shaping England's future cricketing successes.
