Champions Trophy 2025 Could Be Held In South Africa If PCB Rejects Hybrid Model Proposal

The Champions Trophy 2025 might be hosted entirely in South Africa if the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) does not accept the International Cricket Council's (ICC) proposal. This situation arose after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) decided against travelling to Pakistan for the tournament.

BCCI has formally informed ICC of their decision, citing security concerns as the reason for not visiting Pakistan. This decision led to the postponement of the schedule announcement event, initially planned for November 11.

Champions Trophy 2025 May Shift to South Africa

PCB is facing a challenging situation as their chief, Mohsin Naqvi, insists on hosting the entire tournament in Pakistan. If they don't agree to a hybrid model, they risk losing hosting rights altogether.

According to Sports Tak, ICC plans to relocate the Champions Trophy to South Africa if PCB rejects a hybrid model. This model would involve India's matches being played elsewhere, such as UAE or Sri Lanka.

BCCI maintains that they will only travel to Pakistan if permitted by the Indian government. Last year, India did not visit Pakistan for the Asia Cup, which was conducted using a hybrid model instead.

During Asia Cup 2023, India's matches were held in Sri Lanka. Many anticipate a similar arrangement for the Champions Trophy, but there's also a possibility of moving it entirely to another country.

Potential Withdrawal by Pakistan

A report from Dawn indicates that Pakistan's government might instruct PCB to withdraw from the tournament. The report states: "In such a case, one of the options the government is mulling is that of asking the PCB to ensure Pakistan don't participate in the Champions Trophy."

India hasn't visited Pakistan since 2008 due to strained political relations. Their last tour was for Asia Cup 2008. The two teams have mostly faced each other in ICC tournaments and Asia Cups since then.

Future of India-Pakistan Clashes

The possibility of India vs Pakistan cricket matches could be at risk as reports suggest Pakistan may refuse future encounters with their arch-rivals in any tournament.

This scenario mirrors last year's situation when Pakistan threatened to boycott ICC ODI World Cup 2023 in India after India declined to travel for Asia Cup. Eventually, however, Pakistan participated in that major event held in India.
