Champions Trophy 2025: ICC Board Meeting On November 29 Concludes Without Resolution On Hybrid Model Dispute

The International Cricket Council (ICC) Board recently held a brief meeting on November 29 to discuss the Champions Trophy 2025. However, no consensus was reached regarding its future. The virtual meeting lasted just 20 minutes and included participation from all 15 board members, comprising 12 full members and three Associate nation directors. The unresolved issue with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) over the hybrid model proposal remains a significant hurdle.

Reports indicate that the PCB opposes the hybrid hosting model, which suggests another country could host matches involving India while the rest of the tournament takes place in Pakistan. India has declined to travel to Pakistan due to security concerns, making this proposal contentious. The PCB insists on hosting the entire event in Pakistan or not at all, complicating negotiations further.

ICC Board Meeting on Champions Trophy 2025 Ends Without Resolution

The Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi has effectively confirmed that India will not visit Pakistan due to security issues. Ongoing civil unrest in Pakistan weakens their case for hosting. The Champions Trophy is set for February 19 to March 9, 2025, but is already behind schedule. The ICC has yet to release fixtures, adding uncertainty about its fate.

Exploring alternative venues like the UAE or South Africa is under consideration but would require significant logistical changes. Despite no resolution from Friday's meeting, it was seen as a positive step towards dialogue. The ICC board plans to reconvene soon to continue discussions, though resolving these complexities may take more than 24 hours.

1. Full Relocation: Moving the entire tournament to a neutral venue such as the UAE or South Africa is being considered.

2. Hybrid Model Revisions: Adjusting the hybrid hosting model so India plays its matches in the UAE while Pakistan hosts most games domestically.

3. Postponement: Delaying the tournament could provide more time for negotiations.

The ICC remains committed to finding a solution to avoid further delays and disruption of this marquee event on the international calendar. With cricket fans from both nations watching closely, there is mounting pressure on the ICC to resolve this issue swiftly.
