BCCI Confirms Shubman Gill's Thumb Injury Before First Test Against Australia

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has disclosed why Shubman Gill was not part of the first Test against Australia. The match, held in Perth, is the opening game of a five-match series. Gill was expected to play but had to withdraw due to an unexpected injury.

During preparations, the Indian team conducted a simulation Test at the WACA. It was during this session that Gill injured his finger while fielding. As a result, Devdutt Padikkal has been brought in as his replacement for the match.

BCCI Reveals Shubman Gill's Injury Details

BCCI confirmed that Gill injured his thumb on the second day of the simulation Test. This injury ruled him out of selection for the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. "Shubman Gill sustained a left thumb injury during Day 2 of match simulation at The WACA. He was not considered for selection for the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy," stated BCCI on X.

Despite hopes for his return before the second Test, BCCI has not provided a specific timeline for when he might be back on the field. "The BCCI Medical Team is monitoring his progress on a daily basis," they added.

Gill's absence is a setback for India, especially given his recent form. Known for providing strong starts, his unavailability has led to changes in India's batting order. KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal are now opening in Perth.

Sources indicate that Gill might miss at least the first two matches depending on how his recovery progresses. The full extent of his injury remains unclear, but it could affect India's strategy in upcoming games.

Rohit Sharma's Return

India will find some relief as captain Rohit Sharma is set to rejoin them on Sunday, November 24. Rohit missed the Perth Test due to personal reasons but plans to fly to Australia over the weekend.
