BCCI To Discuss Player Retentions And RTM With IPL Team Owners On July 31
The BCCI and IPL owners are scheduled to meet on July 31 in Mumbai. The meeting will take place at the newly-refurbished BCCI office within the Wankhede Stadium complex. This venue has been confirmed for the important discussions.
Several team owners have acknowledged the meeting date, which was communicated by BCCI CEO Hemang Amin on Thursday morning. Key topics include player retention numbers, the possible return of the Right To Match (RTM) option, and salary caps for teams and retained players.

Franchises have proposed that the BCCI allow them to retain between four to six players. Additionally, some teams believe that eight RTM options should be available to them. These suggestions aim to help teams maintain their core units and ensure players get fair compensation.
In 2018, franchises could retain up to five players using a combination of direct retention and RTM options. However, in 2022, with the introduction of Gujarat Titans (GT) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), only four retentions were allowed, and RTM was removed. This change aimed to provide a level playing field for the new teams.
Teams argue that reintroducing RTM would help them keep their core players intact and avoid financial disappointment for players lower in the retention order. The first retained player receives the highest salary, so RTM could ensure better earnings for others. Franchises also claim that losing key players involuntarily affects their branding and image.
Reports indicate that teams are advocating for a mega auction every five years. This would allow continuity and investment in local and emerging talents. Such a structure would provide stability while fostering new talent development.
The upcoming meeting will address these critical issues, aiming to balance team competitiveness with fair player compensation. The decisions made could significantly impact future IPL seasons.
