BCCI Retains Devdutt Padikkal As Replacement For Injured Shubman Gill Ahead Of Australia Test

Shubman Gill's thumb fracture has ruled him out of the first Test against Australia in Perth. As a result, the BCCI has decided to keep Devdutt Padikkal, a former Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) batter, as his replacement.

Gill injured his thumb during a training session at the WACA while attempting a catch in the slips. This incident occurred on the second day of India's three-day simulation. Scans confirmed the fracture, which will keep him out for at least two weeks.

Padikkal Replaces Injured Gill for Australia Test

Padikkal, currently part of the India A squad in Australia, has been asked to stay on as a backup batter. Initially, he was supposed to return to India with the rest of the India A team but will now remain with the senior squad for added depth.

The 23-year-old southpaw is known for his calm batting style and might make his Test debut if deemed ready by team management. His inclusion is crucial as India looks to strengthen their top order before the Border-Gavaskar Trophy opener on November 22.

Padikkal gained attention during the 2020 IPL season with RCB, winning the Emerging Player of the Year award. He scored 473 runs in 15 matches during his debut season, showing remarkable consistency. In 2021, he hit his first IPL century, an unbeaten 101, leading RCB to victory over Rajasthan Royals.

Despite early success, Padikkal was released by RCB after less impressive performances in later seasons. He joined Rajasthan Royals in 2022 and scored his 1,000th IPL run before moving to Lucknow Super Giants in 2024 through a trade.

India's preparations in Australia are further complicated by KL Rahul's elbow injury during practice. His participation in the Perth Test remains uncertain. Additionally, captain Rohit Sharma will miss the first Test due to the birth of his second child in Mumbai.

The team management faces challenges with multiple injuries affecting key players. Retaining Padikkal highlights the need for a ready replacement as India aims for a strong series start. With IPL experience and adaptability under pressure, Padikkal could be vital in this high-stakes contest.
