'I Welcome This' - Ex-Bengal Star Lauds BCCI's Ranji Trophy Revamp

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has introduced a significant change to the structure of the Ranji Trophy, splitting the tournament into two halves from the upcoming season. This decision has been met with appreciation from the cricketing community, including former Bengal player and CAB selector Subhomoy Das, who highlighted the positive impact this could have on domestic cricket.

The restructured format will see the Duleep Trophy kick off the domestic season, followed by the Irani Trophy. The Ranji Trophy will then commence, with teams playing five first-class matches before taking a break. During this hiatus, the Mushtaq Ali and Vijay Hazare Trophies will be played. The season will resume with the final two rounds of Ranji matches and the knockout fixtures. This adjustment aims to reduce player workload and fixture congestion.

BCCI's Ranji Revamp Praised

Subhomoy Das expressed his support for the BCCI's decision, emphasizing the potential benefits for domestic players. He noted that playing alongside or against international stars in the second half of the Ranji Trophy could significantly enhance their development. "There is always a thought process behind this. If our international stars play in the second half of the Ranji Trophy, I will absolutely welcome this," Das stated in an exclusive chat with MyKhel.

However, it remains uncertain whether top international players will participate in the latter stages of the Ranji Trophy. Should this come to fruition, it would not only elevate domestic cricket but might also necessitate adjustments to the Indian international cricket schedule, typically busy during January and February when the second half of the Ranji Trophy is proposed to take place.

This innovative approach by BCCI aims to strike a balance between managing player workload and enhancing the competitive experience for domestic cricketers by potentially integrating international talent into the mix. The success of this format could pave the way for further developments in India's domestic cricket landscape.
