T20 World Cup 2024: Taskin Ahmed Keeps Bangladesh's Semi-Final Hopes Alive

Bangladesh pacer Taskin Ahmed remains optimistic about his team's chances of reaching the semifinals in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024. Ahead of their Super 8 clash against India at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in North Sound, Antigua, on Saturday (June 22), Taskin expressed hope despite a challenging start.

Bangladesh, part of Group 1 alongside India, Afghanistan, and Australia, faced a tough defeat in their Super Eight opener against Mitchell Marsh's Australian side on Thursday (June 20). This loss placed them at the bottom of the Group 1 table with a net run rate (NRR) of -2.471.

Bangladesh's Semi-Final Hopes in T20 WC

Despite the setback, Taskin remains hopeful about his team's prospects. "We still have chances. The wicket is good here. It won't be easy for sure. But we are not giving up hope. If we can win both matches, then we will have a chance to play the semi-final," he stated during a pre-match press conference.

He added that even if rain affects their next game and they secure just one point, winning the final match could still keep their semifinal hopes alive. Reflecting on their previous loss, Taskin noted that a low total and aggressive play by the opposition contributed to their defeat.

Wicket Conditions

Taskin mentioned that playing against Australia on a night match wicket posed challenges but expects better conditions for their daytime match against India. "It's getting better than before. But we haven't played in the USA and here also at the beginning with such a batting-friendly wicket. Each venue has a different wicket. The challenge here is a bit different. The batsmen are a bit more favoured here," he explained.

He emphasized the need for Bangladesh to score at least 170 or 180 if they bat first and highlighted the importance of smart bowling due to small margins for error on such wickets.

Acknowledging India's Strength

While maintaining hope, Taskin acknowledged the significant challenge posed by India, describing them as one of the top teams globally. "Antigua and Barbados have good wickets. Other than that, in all the venues and also in the US, batsmen in all teams have struggled a lot. Although we can bat better than this. Unfortunately, we couldn't do it," he said.

He stressed the importance of performing well in both batting and bowling to stand a chance against India. "The next match is very important. We have to do well in both batting and bowling. India is one of the top sides in the world. There is no doubt that they are a better team. We have to do something extraordinary if we want to play with them," Taskin concluded.
